Geranium maderense - Madeira - I grew this geranium for 4 years in a wheelbarrow waiting for it to flower. The summer of 2004 it finally flowered. G. maderense can grow to 5' x 5'. It never reached that size in my wheelbarrow attaining a maximum size of 2.5' x 3'. The foliage is very similar to G. pratensis. It has an unusual feature in that it grows a trunk. As each leaf dies it lowered to the ground leaving its stem behind as a type of strut which helps support the trunk. The purple pink flowers are held well above the foliage. It is quite spectacular when in bloom. After my G. maderense finished blooming it died. In September I started finding seedlings growing in my gravel patio. The seeds I sowed in a 4" pot took a few months to germinate. In colder climates grow in a large container which can be moved indoors during freezing weather. ZONE 9 - 10 SEEDS
